Integrity Score
Important: These results are probabilistic indicators, not proof. High-quality manipulation may not be detected, and genuine images can occasionally trigger false positives. Results should be considered alongside other evidence and expert review.
🎨 Error Level Analysis
ELA reveals regions with different compression histories. Bright areas indicate higher error levels — consistent manipulation signatures appear as localised bright patches against a uniform background.
👥 Clone / Copy Detection
Duplicate regions are highlighted. Copied bands, cloned backgrounds, or repeated lane content appear as matched pairs connected by lines.
📊 Intensity Distribution
Manipulated images often show unnatural gaps (missing intensity values) or sharp spikes in the histogram — signatures of levels adjustments, clipping, or compositing.

About the Western Blot Checker

Image manipulation in western blots — splicing bands together, duplicating lanes, or selectively adjusting brightness and contrast — is one of the most common reasons figures are flagged during peer review or post-publication scrutiny. This free tool runs the same forensic checks used by journal editors and image integrity reviewers, entirely in your browser, so you can spot problems before you submit.

The checker analyses your image using four techniques:

Once you have a clean blot, you can move straight into AutoBlot Studio to detect bands, quantify intensities, normalise to a loading control, run statistics, and export a publication-ready figure.

What does the Western Blot Checker look for?

It runs four checks on your uploaded image: error level analysis (ELA) to highlight areas that may have been edited or recompressed differently from the rest of the image, clone/copy detection to flag duplicated regions such as repeated bands or backgrounds, a pixel intensity histogram to spot saturation and unnatural gaps or spikes, and file metadata extraction to review embedded image information.

Is the Western Blot Checker really free and do I need an account?

Yes, the checker is completely free and does not require an account. Your image is analysed entirely in your browser and is never uploaded to a server.

Does a flagged result mean the image was manipulated?

No. The results are probabilistic indicators, not proof of manipulation. Compression, scanning, cropping, and normal image processing can all produce similar signatures. Findings should be considered alongside other evidence and expert review.

What image formats can I upload?

The checker accepts PNG, JPG, TIFF, BMP, and WebP files.

Can I export the results?

Yes, you can export the full report as a TXT file or a PDF for your records.
